French wine traces its history to the start of Roman rule in ancient Gaul. Though the production of wine for export dates from British rule of Bordeaux.
France has a very large domestic market for its own wines though the French have been consuming less wine per capita in the last few decades. Most of the expensive high end wines are produced for the export market and increasingly for investment purposes.
The concept of 'terroir', linking wine to the environment and soil it is produced in is a French one. It is now a part of the worldwide language of wine.
