A wine tasting competition in 1976, now termed the Judgement of Paris, in which American red and white wines beat their French counterparts in a blind tasting competition is seen as a turing point for American wines, especially California wines, in gaining worldwide prestige. Another tasting in San Francisco in 1978 further cemented the reputation of American wine.
